Addictive Substances and Behaviors

Alcohol and Alcohol Use Disorder
Alcohol is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world, with nearly 85% of American adults reporting use at some point in their lives. Despite its legal status and social acceptance, alcohol contributes to more than 140,000 deaths annually in the United States, primarily due to liver disease, accidents, and alcohol-related violence. Its pervasiveness spans cultural rituals, daily routines, and weekend escapes, making its impact on society both normalized and devastatingly invisible.

Marijuana, Cannabis, THC, CBD, and Marijuana Use Disorder
Cannabis occupies a complex position in the American psyche: once a symbol of rebellion, it’s now legal for recreational use in nearly half of the U.S. states. An estimated 17.7% of young adults report frequent use, and while legalization has helped dismantle aspects of the War on Drugs, cannabis use disorder is rising, particularly among teens. Socially, the shift has opened new economic doors while also exposing regulatory and public health challenges.
