Painkiller (Opioid) Addiction: Understanding, Impact & Healing at Red Door Life
Prescription painkillers—specifically opioids such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine—have led to one of the most complex addiction challenges in America. From 2015 to 2018, roughly 5.7% of U.S. adults reported using prescription opioids in the past 30 days, while 10.7% used one or more prescription pain medications, including non-opioid types.
Misuse is widespread: about 9.3 million Americans report abusing prescription opioids, and one in three patients prescribed these medications can develop dependency or addiction.
This misuse has contributed to tragic outcomes: since 1999, over 760,000 overdose deaths have occurred in the U.S., with 75% involving opioids.

What Are Prescription Painkillers?
Prescription painkillers, often referred to as opioids, are medications derived from or modeled after compounds in the opium poppy. These agents—such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, and codeine—bind to opioid receptors in the brain and body to block pain signals and produce feelings of relief and relaxation.
Opioids are vital for treating acute or severe pain, such as post-surgical or cancer-related pain—but their addictive potential is significant.

How Opioids Affect the Individual
Short-Term Effects:
-
Pain relief, relaxation, mild euphoria
-
Common side effects: drowsiness, nausea, slowed breathing, constipation
Long-Term Risks:
-
Tolerance and physical dependence—requiring higher doses for the same effect
-
Acute withdrawal symptoms upon cessation
-
Increased overdose risk—especially when mixed with fentanyl or other depressants
-
Significant addiction rates: about one in three prescribed opioid patients may develop misuses or dependency
