RECOVERY... not just treatment.

If you really want to know how impactful our work is,
read what our clients have to say...

I'm sober and have experienced the longest period of sobriety in my adult life. I found a job I enjoy and people that I call community. Addiction is a fight we can't manage on our own. Red Door Life gave me tools to fight that fight every day and I'm forever grateful. I also built a community there and that's something I plan to stay plugged in with for a long time....
My experience at Red Door Life was life-changing and exactly the spiritual healing that I needed. It gave me a safe place to come down from a destructive episode of addiction and allowed me to learn the tools for lasting sobriety. Today, I have more than half a year sober which is the longest length of time I've had in decades. I continue to stay connected with Red Door Life and have built a community there....
From the moment I arrived, I was embraced by a community that truly understands and cares. The visionary owners, Alex Shohet and Berni Fried, have created an environment that is both welcoming and healing. Their dedication to fostering a safe space for all individuals is evident in every aspect of the facility. They have crafted a haven where everyone, especially those from the LGBTQIA+ community like myself, can feel understood, respected, and represented. The compassionate staff at Red Door Life are second to none...

RED DOOR LIFE: FEATURED ARTICLES

Working in this industry for decades, we have all lost countless precious loved ones to the ever-growing addiction crisis. Of course, our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of celebrities whose lives have also been ravaged by this global emergency. But we are sickened that the media chooses to highlight this issue only when a celebrity is involved and only from the angle of exposing a filtered view which is packaged as scandal for gossip and maximum clicks. The media has the power to expand the conversation to discuss the real issues at play- the complexities… and lack of insight, effort, and resources invested in treating high-acuity cases… AND THE SOLUTIONS! In our latest article, we discuss all of this and how mainstream treatment actually contributes to people becoming treatment-resistant. If you are familiar with us, then you know we do things extraordinarily differently and this is because we are heartbroken over the failings of mainstream treatment to provide lasting solutions and we believe in the value and potential of each human life. By sharing this information, we hope to change the conversation to one that could improve the lives of millions.

The status quo in high-end detox, addiction, substance abuse, and mental health & trauma treatment is virtually the same everywhere you look. One is extricated from their environment, surrounded by resort-style amenities, attends groups and meetings, meets some peers that they may or may not keep in touch with, goes through detox, and abstains from substance use for a few days, weeks, or months… hopefully receives some therapy and coping skills and then is dumped back in the original environment with all its triggers and conditions that made the person sick in the first place- often without much support or environmental change. Clients with much lower severity cases have a better chance at an effective recovery in this model and perhaps even those with moderate to severe cases can abstain for a brief time- perhaps even a long time. But as the client returns to being alone in their life without the underlying trauma and aspects that were overwhelming or destabilizing having been resolved, usually the brute force strength of willpower wears thin with time. It is often not long before one ends up right back in treatment, generating a sustained income loop for the majority of treatment centers and placing the blame, shame, and responsibility solely on the client. At Red Door Life Detox and Substance Abuse Recovery Treatment Center in Los Angeles, CA, we call this The Car Wash Model- one comes in, “gets clean”, gets out… rinse and repeat.

Our Founder's Story

The innovative programs and services offered at Red Door Life were co-developed by Alex Shohet and Bernadine Fried, LMFT.  On the path of their own recovery, Alex Shohet started and led a few successful technology companies and at the same time, Bernadine Fried, LMFT, became a leader in the treatment of trauma and substance use disorders.

In 2005, they joined forces to improve the broken system of addiction and mental health treatment services by disrupting the antiquated care models that plague the industry.   Almost 20 years later, the model of care they developed and their groundbreaking innovations give the Red Door Life community members an unparalleled opportunity to achieve a life of abundance, meaning, health, and wellness.
